Construction of a new 3 storey student centre at an Essex university campus
We were appointed as the University’s Project Officer to deliver the ambitious Silberrad Student Centre, a £12.5 million construction project to provide the required space and addition services in a style as iconic as the original. The building was also required to be sympathetic to the surrounding parkland setting and to act as the new ‘front door’ of the University.
The Centre included a new reception area to serve the whole campus, a 24 hour reading room, meeting rooms, an IT hub for creative and group working, new IT facilities including touchdown access and a new helpdesk, a state of the art media centre for the Students’ Union and an extensive one stop shop for accommodation, payments, registration and student welfare.
It was constructed alongside the Library Extension making this ambitious project the largest construction project to take place at the University since 1965.
The original library remained open throughout the duration of the works and was acoustically screened to protect students from excessive construction noise. Additionally, the programme of works was adjusted so that exam season and graduation days were not disrupted and the campus community was kept up to date with progress via a monthly newsletter.
The project won the following awards:
- RIBA National Award 2016
- RIBA Regional Building of the Year Award 2016
- RIBA Regional Award 2016
